Prompt: Create a drafting utensil or instrument based on a human movement

The double meaning of the word instrument resonated with me. I used this project to investigate the translation between art forms, specifically between music and drawing. I traced the motion of a friend’s hands in the use of a cello, and created the drafting instrument to replicate the fluidity, but precision, of how the bow is used. I built the Picasso-esque cello model to give the drafting tool context as both an instrument, and a tool.

As I recorded the movements, I made notes of ideas regarding the translation I was exploring, specifically regarding the motion of the hand. As well, I was considering the translation of music to other art forms, and the methods of translation used such as musical notation as an adaptation of music to the written word.
